A Nigerian born American police officer Samuel Balogun (rtd) has said that community policing when introduced will reduce security challenges facing the nation to the barest minimum. Mr Balogun who has served in the US police force gave the advice while speaking to some journalists during his visit to Lagos.
In his word, Balogun said security is an important issue that requires urgent attention of both the government and the citizenry and the government needs to give a major priority to security challenges in the country. He noted that when a nation is free from security threats, this will attract foreign investors into such country and it will boost the socio-economic activities of the nation.
Mr Balogun further pointed out the significance of having community policing in this modern world as the approach enables police officers to identify everyone living in the neighborhood by creating a close relationship and familiarity between every one in the community.
He further advised the federal government to improve the welfare of security personnel in the country as this will further motivate them in rendering their duty diligently. He added that regular training and re-training of officers should also be encouraged so as to enable officers discharge their duties professionally. He also encouraged the security personnel to desist from corrupt practices but ensure the protection of lives and properties of the citizens.
On his part in contributing to the nation, Mr. Balogun said he has initiated a move to launch a security outfit that will be of international standard which will employ young Nigerians who will receive the best training in dealing with security threats in the country. He noted that his idea of coming back to Nigeria to establish the security outfit is to further use his wealth of experience in the security sector as an opportunity to contribute to the socio-economy of the country. He said with his security organisation, more jobs opportunity will be available for the teaming unemployed youths in the country.
